Character Evolution
When the X-Men became engaged in a conflict with Norman Osborn’s Dark Avengers, Xavier, Rogue, and Danger decided to return to the X-Men and help them out with the riots that had thrust San Francisco into chaos. He met Charles Xavier, who was trying to rebuild his mind when they were attacked by agents of Black Womb. Along with Sebastian Shaw, they discovered the Chronos Machine was trying to reincarnate Mr. Sinister in the body of Xavier, Shaw, or Juggernaut. Gambit and his allies prevented Sinister’s resurrection (at least, from this mechanism). Remy was subsequently captured and brought before a mock trial held by Magneto, the mutant master of magnetism, then disguised as Erik the Red.
Now indebted to Sinister, Gambit undertook several missions for him but soon wanted to leave his service. Sinister charged Remy with one last mission—assembling the Marauders—for which Remy received his excised brain tissue as a symbolic payment. When Sinister had the Marauders massacre the underground Morlock community, a horrified Remy tried to stop them but was almost killed by the Marauder Sabretooth. Remy Etienne LeBeau’s life started out hard and just kept getting harder.
Both of them study each other’s psychology and develop an affection for each other. Gambit also became one of Magneto’s Acolytes, who helped him avoid the existence of Apocalypse. As Rogue was being mentally controlled by Mesmero, she kissed Gambit using her powers of absorption to gain some of Gambit’s powers for a time.
